Happy Birthday, old girl!

Eighty years ago today was the B-17's official birthday.

That first Fortress, or rather, its prototype, the Model 299, took off from Boeing Field on this day in 1935.  What a fateful day!  In less than a decade, thousands upon thousands of B-17s would be helping to win the war for the Allies.

The Model 299 rolls out.

But the big bomber almost never was.  When Boeing brought the prototype up for testing, in hopes of winning a government contract, disaster struck.  A forgotten gust lock was determined to be the cause of a spectacular crash that injured Boeing's test pilot, Les "Cowboy" Tower, who later died, and killed test pilot Major Ployer Pete Hill.

Here are some informative links, if you would like to learn more about the birth of the Flying Fortress.

Happy Father's Day!

Father's Day is this weekend, folks.

For my Dad, the best gift would be to locate his Uncle Charlie and pilot John Way.  While the powers that be continue creating paperwork and deciding who, when, where, which and how many - none of us are getting any younger. Daddy keeps peddling his book, trying to get enough raised to rent a boat and coordinate this shebang himself with the help of a few wise advisers and some wonderful, selfless volunteers.

So don't forget your own Dad, husband or family WWII historian this weekend.  Remember,
June 25 1943 MIA The Search for Miss Deal and The Early Raiders on the Reich makes a great gift for Father's Day!!

Buy it here at Amazon.

Thanks for your support and prayers.

Happy Father's day to all!

June 6-7: Heart of Texas Airshow

Hello all...

Come on down to the Heart of Texas Airshow this weekend at the TSTC (formerly TSTI) airport in Waco, Texas.  The USAF Thunderbirds will be there, the Army's Golden Knights parachute team, Fort Worth's own Trojan Phlyers Airshow and Air Racing Team (a pair of sleek T-28s), and many other great aircraft.  There's a ton of things to see and do...!

Tony plans to be there on Saturday and possibly Sunday.  Stop by to buy a book and support the effort to raise Miss Deal!  If you already have the book, say "Hi" to Tony... and ask for the latest good news!

Tony will be "tied down" close to Texas Raiders.

Be sure to give the old girl a walk-through, and if you have time, get in line for a ride.  The B-25 Devil Dog, a P-51, and a few others plan to give rides too.  A great Father's Day gift, and it supports those who keep these beautiful birds in the air.

Have a great weekend!
